Gene Simmons and Porn on Roller Skates
The Venice experience just wouldn't be complete without an industry party involving Gene Simmons and porn.
Right?
A couple nights ago I was introduced to LA's bread and butter: having connections. Because of them, I found myself on the guest list to the industry party celebrating the launch of the television station NGTV, which is co-ownered by Gene Simmons from KISS.
The party took place in an old roller skate rink, and was '70s porn in theme. On giant plasma screens screwed into the the walls on the far side of the subleveled roller rink, '70s porn quietly played away as I pretended not to notice. Sidenote: Japanese guys love the porn. They were hanging over the railing between the lobby (where the party was taken place) and the roller rink (where people decked out in '70s style clothes and hairdoes were being utterly ignored) with their tongues hanging out akin to a panting wolf from an old Warner Brothers cartoon. And Simmons thought he had a knack of rolling his tongue out of his mouth.
Speaking of the guest of honor, Gene Simmons walked around and mingled with the rest of us throughout the night. He seemed like a pretty down to earth guy, but he was busy living up to his reputation with the ladies. Chris Pean (Reservoir Dogs), Ron Jeremy (let's just say he is famous from the "Surreal Life" and leave it at that), and the director of the American version of The Ring (google that for me, would you?) also freely chatted with everyone. There were also a handful of porn stars dancing around and gambling topless. To my credit, I didn't recgonize any of them.
If the guest appearances weren't enough, there were also comped drinks and food all night, and the arcade's prize counter was transformed into an adult toys redemption stand for the tickets won through gambling (which was essentially free because everyone was given $100 credit at the beginning of the night).
I don't know how crazy it got at the end of the night because I turned in at two in the morning.
I am a simple Viking, afterall.
